Creating Backup Jobs in Alike v4.0: Protect All VMs on One Host

Welcome to Alike v4.0 video tutorials! Creating backup jobs is easy with the new drag and drop feature. Alike v4.0 also introduces the ability to create a ‘host based’ dynamic job to ensure that all VMs on that host are protected without manually managing them.

In this video you will learn how to:

  • Protect all VMs on a host without manually adding them to the job
  • Ensure that any future VMs added to the host are protected
  • Manage backups for systems with unique naming conventions

To create a new backup job, you will first go to Jobs -> New Job -> Backup

On this screen you’ll see that you can choose which systems or VMs to backup (for instance, we have a few demos on our beta software). You can choose an individual VM and drag and drop it manually, or you can choose the entire system from the drop down menu, and this will include all VMs on that system.

This is a super convenient way to quickly ensure all VMs on that host are protected without manually managing them. It also means that any future VMs added to the host are protected, and any VMs that are removed are also removed from the job.

You can also run a dynamic keyword query for backup jobs, which allows you to dynamically select systems for the backup, instead of traditionally selecting and removing them manually. This is also very useful because it allows you to manage your backups using organizational techniques outside of alike, whether you use unique naming conventions, xenserver tags, etc.
